I can see where they're coming from, but taking a potshot at Tron is just cruel. High contrast and unnatural colors were the whole point! Why not point out the Simpsons movie while they're at it?

Wow. That's... wow.

I knew about O Brother, Where Art Thou? because it was in the special features and they wanted a specific look to the movie, to make it look dusty and old, but... that's just amazing.

I love it when this kind of thing is found out, because it shows you just how much big companies want to manipulate you into liking how things look. Explains a lot about why everyone loved how Transformers 2 looked.

I read this like two weeks ago and it's like that line from Futurama: "YOU'VE SEEN IT, YOU CAN'T UNSEE IT."

Also this.

I know this is going to sound like bullshit but I totally noticed this in Transformers. It made everything look unnatural and I couldn't get over the contrast the whole time.

But this, this is a conspiracy! Good god!

Bad Lieutenant is absolutely bluoranged to the teeth, which is vexing since Herzog has always been a strong visual artist. Most of his films take on the quality and composition of canvas paintings, then Bad Lieutenant comes along and it's... whatever it is.

It's the only thing about the movie that I don't care for and Herzog does make up for it by having Nicolas Cage interrogate an elderly caretaker by pointing a gun in her face and cutting off her wheelchair patient's oxygen supply, but still... notable difference. It's a thing that niggles the back of the mind. The only way I could be more alarmed would be if Jodorowsky finally made King Shot and decided to color-grade it to bluorange.

I don't necessarily think the color-treating is that big of a deal alone, since it does help make low budgie films look nice without stretching the wallet, but it's also kind of like spraytan. People start abusing it and soon everybody looks like they're ready to apply for a job at Wonka's chocolate factory.

There was some weird light filtering going on in that film too. It looked like they ran the movie through Photoshop effects.

Neil Marshall's Doomsday had a bit of bluorange going on, though it was a gorgeous-looking film regardless. I don't recall him using it on The Descent, I'd have to go back and watch it again to be sure, but his upcoming Centurion does indeed look very blue and orange:

... However, like Doomsday, it sure looks pretty. I suppose when you have a cinematographer as brilliant at lighting as Sam McCurdy, it doesn't matter much.
