Now what are some Japanese games I can play on it without actually knowing Japanese? PS1 would also be gratefully accepted.

Here's a current list of what I have:
[hint: they're all shmups]
Mushihimesama
Dragon's Blaze/Sol Divide
Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou
Espgaluda
Sexy Parodius

I want more! Any weird shit, dungeon crawlers maybe? I also love robot games. If at all possible, I'd really REALLY like another game like Yume Nikki and LSD: Dream Emulator where the point is pretty much aimless wandering. If something like that exists for the PS2, that would be awesome.

Taisen! Bakudan Poi Poi. A game about businessmen, schoolgirls, and nurses throwing bombs at each other.

The Maid Uniform and Machine Guns: An extremely low-budget game about a maid with a machine gun. I have this one in the mail atm.

Endnesia: A trippy exploration game with AMAZING visuals and music. Looks like it will be hard without japanese knowledge, but this is definitely one I'm getting.

Reveal Fantasia: A lifestyle platformer/RPG without any combat about raising money to help your family over the course of 10 months. Sounds like my kind of thing, but this one is probably pointless without japanese knowledge. I'll check it out in a year or so. Very girly.

Chain Dive: A cool looking game about a hookshot with sweet music and graphics. Developed by the same people who made Malicious!

Poinie's Poin: Eerrrmmm, oh christ. A game entirely in "english" with the most incomprehensible humor I've ever seen. A total acid trip. Getting this one soon.

Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 2: Sengoku Ace & Sengoku Blaede; Can't get enough of Psikyo shoot-em-ups. So much fun.

The Nekomura no Hitobito: This seems to be Pikmin with adorable kittens. Fantastic. (Simple series vol 116)

"The Helicopter." Use a toy helicopter to help out naked women. What more could you possibly want. (Simple series vol 35)

Tori no Hoshi: A peaceful exploration game about flying around on a bird.

Thanks for all your help guys! keep the suggestions coming!

Poor Nanoko ;_;

I think my softmodded PS2 can play games from other regions. Not sure.

Hi Sephy! If its softmodded, I'm assuming you're using freemcboot?

I was considering that before I went out and bought a new one. You will be able to play games from other regions, just not legitimately. Your two options would either be running a game from your hard drive, or running an iso, but it will NOT play legitimate import copies. This is because the way freemcboot works, it still doesn't bypass region protection, so you'll need to patch any isos before your ps2 will run them.

Alternatively, if you're using swapmagic then you can play the real discs, but it's dangerous for your PS2 so I don't recommend it.

EDIT: Also from the time I posted this thread I decided to just learn Japanese instead. Just saying, but this has completely changed gaming for me, and is what rekindled my interest in the gaming world entirely. It's crazy how much great stuff there is out there that the rest of the world doesn't have access to until you make the jump.
